I found this book incredibly moving, and enjoyed the way it flicked between past and present, although I did find it confusing at times as chapters and passages aren’t time stamped. This writing style did make the story quite slow-paced for me, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book.

I found the characters lovable and the book not being told in 1st person whilst focusing on the Lee family members really allows you to understand each of their points of view and their actions. I really felt for all the characters, understanding both the children’s reactions to the situations they found themselves in, but also the reason why it ended up like that following the parents’ experiences of life and what they wanted for them.
