My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff
1.0
Wow. I'm surprised by al the rave reviews of this. I had zero sympathy / empathy / positive impressions of the author whatsoever. She just seemed to la-dee-da float along and wait for life to hand her what she wanted. Completely clueless. How long did we have to hear her bemoaning about how horrible her boyfriend was - and then have the relationship continue on and on? DUMP HIS ASS. She seemed a total space cadet. And how many times was the theme "why didn't anybody tell me?" brought up? Because you assume life is going to be handed to you on a silver platter and you never talk about anything of substance / import.
May the beginning, I couldn't nail the time frame. I kept thinking it was set in the 1960s. The author seemed too clueless to be functioning in the 1990s.
She doesn't bother to find out when said horrible boyfriend's bff was getting married, so she could, yknow, be informed about upcoming events in her life.
She invited her friends to her horrible boyfriend's friend's party, then tries to leave 5 minutes after they arrive, abandoning her friends who she only invited to have a buffer. What a great friend.
She tries to take credit for "bringing art into the world" because she sent a submitted novella to a publishing house and it got accepted.
And she BETRAYS Salinger. I did love the snarky responses to her replies to his fan mail. Ha!
And the irritating "my boss" and "my college boyfriend". Ugh. Couldn't wait for it to finish. (And I should've stopped.).
