King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

This book is so good; fair warning, if you go into this duology hungry for more crows content, you will be disappointed and think the books are slow-paced. But if you go into this duology the way that you should, starving for more nikolai+zoya+ravka content you will be FED. Do not get me wrong there are crow crumbs in the king of scars duology but Ravka and its leaders are the stars of the show. Once I got into this book I couldn't stop. I already want to reread it. I'd recommend refreshing yourself on the events of the shadow and bone trilogy before jumping into king of scars.

At first, it felt like a Jurassic park rip off but eventually, the book found a bit of its own voice. The pacing was off to me I felt like the story evolved really quickly, I understand that it is a quick book, and half the point of erotica is just getting to it but I think the story could've felt more believable if there was even minor bits suggesting time had passed. For example, just a paragraph describing Tallulah's first week at the ranch and how it was a whirlwind of learning and trying to keep her thirst for Reid at bay. Maybe that paragraph was there and I missed it but I stand by my point. I think the bones of the story are good but I am left wanting more of a build-up to the action. Even if the book was the same length I think there are very minor changes that could be made to build more anticipation. I will also admit that sometimes Tallulah's love of dinosaurs was a little bit too in the 'rawr XD' realm and not enough in the scientist realm. I say this as someone who works in a related field who works with plenty of dino obsessed nerds. I have also read nastier smut in books not labelled as erotica
Demon in the Wood Graphic Novel by Leigh Bardugo

the graphic novel is much better than just the written story. its interesting lore to have and reading the short bit as a graphic novel makes it more engaging than 32 pages of reading

Very much hallmark movie vibes but for queer and poc folks. Not a bad read but in my opinion, queer/poc ppl deserve a better hallmark-style romance book. Age gap is kinda wild which like some people are into that but at one point they did point out that Xavier was closer in age to Logan's daughter than to Logan and I just couldn't get that out of my head. Like yeah I'm capable of doing math but I was choosing to live in ignorance.

Just a delicious little book. So warm and cozy. My only complaint is that I want more of it bc I really loved the characters.

All of the puzzles and riddles and clever storybuilding gets a tad confusing at times if youre bad at names and bad at your bible (me I'm very bad at those things) but overall I couldn't put it down and NEEDED to know what happens next. Very much a book where solving a problem unlocks another problem that unlocks a mystery that poses a new problem.

In my book hangover heart this feels like a 5 star book but I know in my brain there were places it lacked a bit for me. But also those lacks were mostly my fault for not remembering earlier stuff. This is probably a case of me being unable to rate first books in a series 5 stars bc I was itching to pick this one up every time I had to step away
