Before We Go Extinct by Karen Rivers

okay, it’s been over a year since i read this book and i just realized i haven’t left a review. so, here it is:

i read this book while i was at my grandmothers cabin. i was reading in the car because it was raining, and i didn’t want to get my book wet. well, my tears completely drenched the fucking pages, so...that’s great (i bought another copy, ‘cause why not? ;)).

Before We Go Extinct tells the story of a teenager named JC or “sharky”, who’s best friend, The King, falls off a building, and—obviously—dies. JC becomes a mute, and his mother sends him to live with his estranged father. we follow his extremely difficult (and realistic) grieving process after he loses all of his friends, alive and dead.

originally, i thought this was just another cliché YA contemporary novel about grief, with an over abundance of romance—which has become very popular—but boy was i wrong. i was SO fucking wrong. Before We Go Extinct is definitely my favorite YA contemporary novel.

i highly recommend it!

i’m not a religious person and my relationship with god is non existent. i’m not usually into religious books either and i had no idea this was one, but for some reason, i really enjoyed it. it kind of gave me coraline vibes.

it did, however, drag on FOREVER. LIKE FUCK STEPHEN DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO STOPPPP

(i was sent an arc copy from grand central publishing in exchange for an honest review)

MY HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTTTTTTT WHAT THE FUCK

this was my update from yesterday:
Five years ago, when the movie came out and all my #tumblr obsessed 6th grade friends were wearing their “okay? okay?” crop tops, I literally wanted to die. I truly didn’t know what it was that made me feel this way—considering I love all john green books—but I just hated it. I decided I would NEVER EVER, EVER, EVER read this goddamn book. But here we are, and my now 16 year old self is LOVING it.

I just got to the part where Augustus confesses his love for Hazel and I’m dying with JOY not ANNOYANCE!!! Now that’s what I call progress.

IM ACTUALLY DYING NOW WHAT THE FUCKKK

blue moon frustrated me. the first half of the novel was slow paced and dull, and it felt totally unnecessary.

all the characters got on my nerves, especially damen. and for fucks sake, ever! you’re so fucking oblivious, man.

“forgiveness is healing.” he smiles. “especially forgiving yourself.”

the ending was definitely unexpected, that’s for sure. also, can we just talk about how annoying damen was at times?! for fucks sake man, get off of stacia already.
