Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
5.0
i loved it. it reminded me of reading the percy jackson series in a way. going on this journey with an ancient god. my goal this year is to read more authors of color (especially latina authors, as i am latina!) but so often the books are centered around trauma or a dictatorship. it wears me down sometimes. this was so refreshing because it was inherently mayan and mexican but without the shroud of trauma. it took me on an adventure and i enjoyed it so much. her writing is definitely elaborate and flowery, though. would love to chat about this book.
This Is Your Destiny: Using Astrology To Manifest Your Best Life by Aliza Kelly

this isn’t an astrology book, really. not like “if you’re a leo, you’re like this.” it asks you to examine yourself, your values, difficulties you might have, and how that all relates to your chart. her argument is that you don’t use the things in your chart as an excuse, but rather as a roadmap for healing/self-actualization. i was genuinely surprised by this book. highly recommend- though not a book for astrology novices (though she does an excellent job explaining the terms)

4.5 stars. i loved this book and couldn’t put it down, but was disappointed at the end when it was all about a boy. the epilogue redeemed it a bit but still, i cared so much about kimberly’s story. her ma.
