Ruminative and effortlessly deep. A daring debut. It does handle some really dark themes and reads more like a poetry novel (Ocean Vuong being a poet) as opposed to a plot-based story.

Steamy, sweet and hopeful. The romance felt authentic if a little bit formulaic. It has lots of humour but it's also compelling in its portrayals of motherhood.

If only this book consisted of only the second part and not whatever the first part was. This book was disjointed, completely unhinged, highly irregular albeit in a purposeful capacity. The second part of the story had much more coherence and a very significant ending.

I love how the ethnic minority characters are written in this book, it shows so much insight and respect. The story is very linear which came off as mundane at times but the tropes felt fresh and original and it was altogether a cute and hopeful story.

An intense, smoky, urbane adult fantasy,  truly an immersive experience.

epic and fantastical! A superb read that draws you into a world of magical beauty detaching you from reality but a bit slow and hard to read at times. A pre founded partiality for the fantasy genre needed to fully this book. Greatly recommend ! :)
