I really do enjoy the writing and word choices. I just feel like so much dragged on and what felt like more important plot points in the story were skipped over and the characterization was just lacking. This book is way too long and says a whole lot of nothing in flowery, grandiose ways. Absolutely amazing premise that I believe not enough was done with despite the length. Even more amazing is that someone was able to turn this into one of the most iconic Broadway musicals and now one of the most iconic movie musicals ever! Book totally got ate up.

I teared up a lot. I am so glad to exist in a word where stories like this are being told and I wish I could’ve read a book like this when I was a kid.

I especially loved how Aidan and his parents were not concerned with the baby’s gender as much as simply preparing for and being excited about the baby’s arrival. I wish more folks thought this way. Even trans folks can be very gendered and binary with how they discuss babies’, children’s, and even other adults’ genders without knowing anything about them and hopefully this book teaches young children to do the opposite!

Zany and honest.

I appreciate how conversational, confessional and stream-of-consciousness Chen Chen’s writing tends to be. Felt like reading someone’s private diary entries; so much vulnerability and truth.
