Heartstopper Volume 4 by Alice Oseman
5.0
TW: eating disorders, mental illness, inpatient

every volume of heartstopper has made me cry for some reason, but this one made me cry the most. i feel charlie’s pain in my heart, and i just feel like i have never seen my own eating disorder spelled out so well. this hit closest to home:
at first, there was a big part of me that didn’t even want to get better. that just wanted to keep pretending i was fine, so i didn’t have to put in the effort to change. i was so scared of losing control. eating was something i could control. (pg. 289)
alice really did a great job of showing what having an eating disorder can be like. personally, i have a sort of mixed bag, but this really clearly conveys what it is like for me. it won’t be like that for everyone, but alice’s representation here was really really great.
and can we talk about nick’s journey??? i love that alice clearly spells out for the reader that it isn’t one individual person’s responsibility to heal/fix their loved ones. that is so important to me.

phew. this one was intense. but give me a group of queer kids trying to save the world and i will fight through my cowardice (aka i dont usually read horror). spooky for sure, but insanely powerful.
