You are Happy by Margaret Atwood

i am no poetry critic by any means, but i really enjoyed this collection. although enjoyed seems like the wrong word for poems that made me angry and sad and mournful.

this was quite fun!! i have some thoughts that are spoilery, and i don’t love to put those in reviews! my biggest note is just that schwab says things whisper, rasp, and hiss a lot. they are good descriptors for the sounds happening, but once you notice it, it’s quite hard to un-notice!
My Special One, Vol. 1 by Momoko Koda

really cute! i read it in like an hour. it’s a little corny but just remember not everything you read has to be so serious! :3
My Special One, Vol. 2 by Momoko Koda

also cute! you get more backstory about the characters, and this volume is a little more serious! but don’t worry, it’s still cheesy. :)

i loved this collection. my favorite poem by far was Sekhmet, but here are a few others that struck me (in no particular order):
-up
-girl with no hands
-miss july grows older
-you come back
-bored
-half-hanged mary
-the loneliness of the military historian
-Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess of war, violent storms, pestilence, and recovery from illness, contemplates the desert in the metropolitan museum of art

the story concept was very cool, but the dialogue jumps and skips over important pieces of information that the art doesn’t clarify. there are posts that you just have to assume what is happening, and it feels like there are cells missing. also, this is book about queer women written by a man, illustrated by a man, lettered by a man, and edited by one woman? i just… i love the representation as a queer person, but it just felt weird to me (especially the sex scenes).
The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

it was not awful! it wasn’t quite as good as i was hoping, but it was okay. hear me out: i wish the ending was clearer. so much of this novel was dragged out, but bits of the ending were left out. i know it’s supposed to add intrigue, but there was a lot of eucalyptus oil talk. i wish there was less eucalpytus oil & more clarity in the ending. otherwise, it was fine!

i read a little on 8/26, but i really crushed it 8/28-8/30. it was so good. made me laugh out loud bc some parts are predictable, but god i enjoyed it. also: best sex scenes i’ve EVER read. it’s like, magic academy + dragons + hot hot hot + 23-year-old (my age!!!) hottest character ever ?? like it was just so good.
