“My chest hurts.”—me, every few pages reading this novel, for varied emotions from horror to the much more slow and painful feelings of grief and hope. I cannot recommend this book enough. It’s also, at the exact right/wrong times, very funny — what is horror if not humor persevering? But yes, at the center, this is a book of witches, devils, a haunted forest, and body horror that work to process family grief and loss. The most horrifying moments, for me, were not just the viscerally written body horror scenes, but the flashbacks to key moments when each family member made a choice. No spoilers—but it’s those moments that stay with you.
