This book is a pretty standard mystery and I love the couple dynamics between the main characters, but where this book really gets it’s rating is a spoiler:
The way that they figured out how to have the main mystery solved by having a trans character was brilliant, especially because everyone was already sort of in on it and just didn’t want to out him was EXTRAORDINARY. Also, the way they could prove that the mystery was solved, also by still not outing him! Absolutely incredible and for that I’d 100% recommend this over and over.

I’d recommend this book who loves regency romances because it’s basically a parody of one. I laughed out loud many times through the audiobook because the characters are just so lovable. Literally everyone is queer, and the density of the main character is just absolutely hilarious as we watch him try to catch up to what’s going on in the world. Even though there is 7 pages of perhaps the most descriptive rim job scene I’ve ever read, I would still classify this book as utterly wholesome and sweet. There is demisexual representation for the main relationship as well as genderfluid rep in one of the side characters!

This was so close to 5 stars for me and I look forward to what the author will add to the series because the world that Xiran Jay Zhao has built is magnificent, intricate, and yet still approachable to young readers. The conversations around gender and societal expectations are so important and the concept of introducing polyamory into a love triangle totally redefined the love triangle trope for me. While the end did feel a little out of place to me, I’m still so eager to read the next book!

Oh my god I am so impressed with this book. A must read and although it is young adult it can and should be read by people of all ages. As white people we will never know the extent of the impact that racism has and this book makes you check your privilege every step of the way. This book is frustrating and you will hurt for the characters the entire way through. An absolutely brilliant and what I predict to be a timeless read.
