What a unique story. I have never read anything quite like it. A gothic post-apocalyptic world. A parasite or two... I may go wash my hands, just in case.
I don't even know where to start with this. I am not a fan of the open ending, but then again, I don't see how one could wrap up the story without a second books worth of story. The worst character by far is Didier. Not badly written but god what an absolute cunt. At points I was so confused, but in retrospect I understand. I struggled to see that the Institute was losing its grip on Simone, but after that has been revealed it all clicked into place. Also the poor doggies. Poor Emile. I really want to know his fate. I want to know what happens when Simone's mothers see her again. Did the Institute die in the château? Were the twins just ghosts? Everything points to that being the case. What about Pseudomycota? Does it spread to the city? This story has so many questions but wow. It really pulls you in.
After finishing the book, I'm just glad I'm all bundled up in my nice, warm bed. What a cool book!

I am in love this book. Doomed generationship, but don't open the door. Imme iately told my boyfriend to read this too so I can talk to him about it. Finding out that the author is an actual astrophysist is the cherry on top and makes this book even fucking cooler!

I quite liked the ending.
It was a surprisingly happy/empowering ending tbh. It was my absolute favourite part.
The beginning was just a little bit of a slow burn. It took a little too long to get going. And all the descriptions kinda made me zone out. Then again, English is not my first language, so that might be a personal thing.
It was hard to relate or sympathise for any character (except for the abuse). Izzy just seemed like an annoying child (but age appropriate, which a lot of authors struggle with, so chapeau!). It did make me quite uncomfortable with how "nice" Tony was shown early on, but I'd like to assume that was the goal. I think I could've gotten more into it, if Jess would have had more of her inner dialogue shown. In the afterword, Nevill did speak of a screenplay, so that makes sense, but it could've been adapted a bit better for the book. Would've loved to read some of Izzy's thoughts too. She just commaned birds to attack her bullies??? And then it just stops being mentioned. A shame.
The cult aspect of the book though. Chef's kiss. I looove how everyone turned out to be in the coven. But that transformation didn't make me like Flo more. I understand she meant well and wanted to drive Jess to murder Tony, but man she was being a bitch lol. Well, to Jess at least. I did not expect the twist of her being one of the "good ones" and that made me happy, as I don't like predictable short books.
It feels like a folk horror kind of story and I am absolutely here for it. A bit of the writing/descriptions of characters was quite repetitive though, which was annoying.
