I will admit this book took a while to get into. The writing is quite overly lyrical and beautiful and I didn’t have the brain power to follow it, however, it definitely picked up from about the 200 page mark and from there I couldn’t put it down!

The story follows Zachary Ezra Rawlings (his full name is used in the majority of his chapters) who is the son of a fortune teller. He stumbles across a mysterious book in his university library and becomes entranced and enthralled with the mystery of the Starless Sea.

He meets Dorian and Mirabel as he goes on this adventure of discover of twists, and turns, and secrets.

It got really good and I’m glad I had this weekend to fully immerse myself into the world- that’s how I think this needs to be read- being fully immersed with no distractions.

The excerpts from the stories included in the Archives were a nice touch but I much preferred the main story, with our characters.

I was not expecting the sexuality of one of the characters to be LGBTQ- wasn’t implied but I’m happy that this was the case I want to read more diversely and it actually made the romance cute.

I’d give this book a 4/5 stars
If I had ended up drawn in from the start I would have given it 5 stars.
I still really enjoyed it though!

If you liked The Night Circus I would highly recommend this.

I got this book for free from Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review.

Hour is Come is a cosy mystery featuring Dotty Sayers, a military wife, now widow, who has to deal with her new situation.

His ex-wife wants to sell all his stuff to an auction house without Dotty’s say so which is how she ends up temporarily working at an antiques shop- and discovering a dead body.

Although the police are dealing with it she also wants to solve it herself.

I found myself flying through this book, the characters are all great, it was fun learning about antiques shops and how they work and the ins and outs- it’s not a setting I’m familiar with!

I really enjoyed the mystery, I managed to work it out but I also liked how Dotty discovered the little things which led to them getting the killer- even if she ended up almost dead herself.

My only gripe was how the Welsh DI was written, the way he spoke just seemed over stereotypical and although I’m not Welsh myself I just found it really irritating.

Other than that it was a good mystery and a good short story.

3.5/5 stars.
