This book was hard to put down and kept me thinking about it when I wasn’t reading. I liked that although it’s a spin off of ember in the ashes, there wasn’t too much time revisiting the previous series’s main characters as that would have felt like the author is overly dependent on invoking our nostalgia to enjoy the book. I really liked the parallels between this book and real life. The dual timelines between characters POVs was a nice touch.

On that note, here’s why it’s not 5 stars. I didn’t like the ending. Maybe the second book will pleasantly surprise me but I really felt like another book wasn’t necessary. This could have been a great standalone. I also felt like the romance was a bit unnecessary, and hard to invest in as it was underdeveloped side plot. I think the book was fast paced which in some ways I enjoyed, but would have liked it to be a little slower and thus more fleshed out.
