A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft

I have mixed feeling on this one. The romance was well written, but also I didn’t really believe it for some reason. Lorelei is unlikeable at first, she is bristly and tears herself down, so I didn’t love following her, but the story is good. I like the mystery, the folklore magic, and the exploration. It was different and fun, but Sylvia is a better character so it was a bit annoying to only be in Lorelei’s head.
This didn’t blow my mind, but I did enjoy it. It was well written and atmospheric, and a different storyline, and a good eerie time.

I don’t know how I felt about this. It was haunting, but not in a horror kind of way, and sad. It makes you question what is real in the story, and want more for the sisters. It was really well done and I don’t regret reading this, but I didn’t love it.

I didn’t know what to expect with this. I was looking forward to the concept of a story based on early women burned as witches in Ireland, but didn’t know what it would look like.
I thought the FMC was really interesting to follow, and I liked how she held true to herself throughout her life. The twist near the end shocked me, it was not what I anticipated from the start. This was dark and heavy, and more sexual than anticipated, but very good.

This was so cute, I enjoyed this so much. This was whimsical, sweet, and such a cute story. Low stakes, but unpredictable (outside of who clearly ends up falling in love). The FMC and MMC both felt fresh and different.
I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the stories in this series, I am excited for more stories in the universe. I am a glad that she didn’t drag out the story of the people in this one into the next books, since this was really the perfect length for the story told.

I really struggled with this at first. I found the modern segments difficult to get through because the FMC is a bit whiney and oh-woes-me-ish. It gets better over time as she grows and accepts responsibility for her life - except for part near the end where all she has to do is literally accept a phone call and listen *bangs head on wall*.
The parts set in the past were so fantastic. It’s a different story that we usually hear, not a lot of popular historic-fiction is set in Shakespearean time and from the view of a woman who isn’t wealthy/high class.
Emilia’s story is tragic from the start, she goes through a lot of good and bad, and in the end you just absolutely are heart-broken for her and her circumstances. I sobbed through the end of it.
This felt very well researched, and I think the modern bits really pulled the story together, but the historic segments are really where this book shines.

A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
4.0
I enjoy T. Kingfisher a lot. Her books always have some level of darkness but also a dash of humor, this is no exception.
I don’t know the fairytale this is based on, so I can’t speak to how well that is done or not. I loved the fact the story was based around the daughter so we got the dynamic of her being naive and navigating relationships with her mom and the new adults she finds herself around.
The women she meets and finds kinship with are so fun and have so much personality.
This is a bit eerie, but not scary by any means, however the mental image of the horse in the end will likely haunt me forever.
