If you can't tell a complete story in 500 pages, maybe the book is all over the place.
The main story line is thrilling and very interesting - the first 100 pages of so and the last 50 pages of so. Rest is distracting, slow, boring, and fluff. Most of the characters are not interesting, are predictable, and some are outright unnecessary (why do you spend 50 pages on a new character towards the end of the book? Why does that character have nothing to do with the rest of the characters or plot?).
It could have been a great epic novel with a great seed of an idea, but the need for scale swallowed everything else.

First half is good. I don't know why the second half went the way it did. New characters, places, motivations. Just lost me entirely.
