Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom by Tsugumi Ohba
5.0
A supernatural notebook, that kills anyone whose name is written in it. A death god named Ryuk. A brilliant student, who decides to take on a mission to rid the world of evil by killing off the criminals. My first encounter with Death Note was through the live action films and I was very intrigued by the concept, as well as the questions about justice and righteousness that were presented. I wanted to read the manga to get the entire story and so far it's absolutely amazing. I still can't figure out whose side I'm on - I keep changing my mind! I really hope all 12 volumes are as great as the first one.

The awesomeness continues :)
Oh hey, finally, an interesting female character! I love her!

Wait a minute... Dammit, Light!! Well, she's missing, so I'm hoping she isn't actually dead. I'll be rooting for L in the meantime, who is also a total badass.

Back to action! A lot happens in this volume and some of it had me very concerned - I couldn't put it down. I'm starting to get overwhelmed by all of the death note "rules" that keep coming up, but it's a minor thing. I really liked the new shinigami - Rem, who is very different from Ryuk. However, the reckless Misa (we got a glimpse of her in the previous book along with Rem) bothers me: she is supposed to be 20 and yet she acts like a 5-year-old. The series could really use a strong female character and Misa is a missed opportunity. Still, this volume was a lot of fun for me to read!

The third volume impressed me a bit less than the first two for some reason, even though pretty much the entire thing is a head-on mental battle between L and Light. When I started reading the series, I was tempted by the vigilante idea and leaning towards siding with Light, but this kid is getting out of control!
Spoiler
And how about that Misa trading half of her life for shinigami eyes?! What a nut case, clearly about to make an even bigger mess out of things!
Death Note, Vol. 6: Give-and-Take by Tsugumi Ohba

I wasn't really into this volume at first - it seemed like same old mind games. I also could have cared less about the new Kira. However, the action really started to build about halfway through the book and the few final chapters had my heart racing. Excellent ending to this volume! I'm excited to have a shinigami back in action too :)
Death Note, Vol. 5: Whiteout by Tsugumi Ohba
3.0
Almost halfway through the series, I feel like it's getting a bit too complicated. This volume did seem like a transition into something more important (hopefully), so perhaps the next one will bring the excitement back. Sure, I was still really into it, but the Shinigami-human interaction was missing for the most part and I wasn't happy about that.
!!!! SPOILERS !!!!
The whole memory loss situation really isn't working for me. I suspect there is going to be some kind of way around it within the endless Death Note rules, which will bring Light's memories back and reunite him with Ryuk. Otherwise, the whole vigilante theme that initially attracted me to the series would be lost, unless another major character is brought in.
