This book definitely is a commentary on how old rich white families in America believe they are entitled to sacrifice the lives of the poor to stay ahead. It’s a major theme throughout the book so if you’re a bootstraps-pulling-die-hard, my advice is to either come in with an open mind or stay away.
This book is between medium and fast paced, there really aren’t any lulls even in the beginning. I would say this is definitely a good summer thriller read.

I do wish there wasn’t as much jumping around. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some non linear storytelling, but it was done in a way that was kinda confusing to figure out. At times it was hard to tell if you were reading about the present or the past. Sometimes also, the middle of the chapter would suddenly jump to the past when I didn’t expect it to. There were also a number of lines I had to reread to figure out what was going on, especially during the jumps.
One thing I did like a lot were the interludes about random people around the world and how their days are disrupted by the apocalypse. Then it has a nice bow on it at the end of the entire book.
If you’re a fan of the podcast, you’ll probably be a fan of this book. It definitely reads like it’s a podcast and the characters talk a lot like they would in a podcast. This makes for quick, easy reading.
