The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
5.0
I don't know if I'll ever give a Samantha Shannon book anything less than 5 stars. Yes, it's a debut novel, and yes, it has its issues, but returning to this work after reading the subsequent books only serves to show how much thought and careful crafting SS has put into this story. Every sentence, every WORD, absolutely drips with meaning and foreshadowing of what is to come. Rereading this book after reading the rest of the (currently released) series is like reading an entirely new story thanks to the context that's layered onto it. This series is rapidly approaching my favourite of all time. A true masterpiece.
The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon
5.0
This book is one of the shorter of the series, but that's because it does not stop. Paige travels farther than she ever has, makes new friends, meets new enemies, and uncovers more about how big this rebellion really is.
I just finished this book, and I'm sobbing. Shannon captures human emotion beautifully and her characters continue to be some of the most complex and well written I've ever had the joy of reading.
There may come a day when I don't rate a Samantha Shannon book 5 stars, but today is not that day.

Started decently and then really dropped off for me. The ending was a flop :(

Winter Dark by Alex Callister

3.5 stars - a decent story, but the narration REALLY makes this what it is. Ell Potter brought Winter to life perfectly, and her portrayal of the other characters was impeccable.
