In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

Pro: I didn't immediately guess the ending.
Con: The story hinges on a 26 year old woman being hung up on a boy she briefly dated at 16. Get a grip, dude.
Characters aren't very likable, but it wasn't a bad book.

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger

This gave me Peter Swanson vibes. Many characters, many storylines that all merge eventually, a lot of drama, a lot of mystery. If you like cheesy and dramatic Law and Order: SVU episodes, it's probably worth a read just for funsies (just don't tell anyone I told you that - I'm trying to come off as aloof and discerning).

Do you want a quick read? Do you want to feel like you are drowning in an ocean of anguish and hopelessness? Do you like cosmic horror? Do you often contemplate the potential existence of otherworldly beings and wonder how they might reach across the veil between their world and our own? Do you think robot assistants are creepy? Are you more of a cat person? I have a book recommendation for you.
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke And Other Misfortunes by Eric LaRocca

Good cheap fun. Lots of creepy, lots of ick, lots of "Huh?"
Very much reminded me of stories Roald Dahl would write à la "The Landlady."

Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica

SO MUCH BETTER THAN LOCAL WOMAN MISSING, but I really wish the ending wasn't so rushed. It was all wrapped up in the last 50 pages, plus a big time jump, which felt really abrupt. I wanted it to be fleshed out more - all the juicy details were completely left out. I was really shocked that it just kinda... Ended. Like Mary Kubica was writing for a long time then decided she had other things to do. But in the end it was all twisty and fun. Would recommend.
You've Lost a Lot of Blood by Eric LaRocca

I really enjoyed this. It was a slow start and I was hesitant, but the story within the story really grabbed onto me and didn't let go til the end. Could be a good contender for a (very dark) Black Mirror episode. The characters outside of the story were, as other reviewers have said, very pretentious, but that's kind of the point... I don't think anyone is supposed to /like/ them.
All said and done: fast read with cinematic imagery!

All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham

My anxiety has been quelled: her second book was just as great as her first!
I loved A Flicker in the Dark, and this one is just as good (if not a little better). While I adored it, I found AFITD pretty predictable, so I was pleased with all the turns this one took. It felt like there was a genuine effort to tie up the loose ends.
There couldn't be a better time to read this book, as there are certain headlines in the news right now that are very relevant to one of its main themes. I found it was a really compassionate look at how women can be treated (and mistreated) for things that are outside of their control.
Also, I just really like mysteries that flip back and forth between the past and present.
My copy had 2 typos I could find, but I'm hoping that's an e-book transcription error and not a "the author had to write her newest novel so quickly that there was no time for small edits" error.

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey

Truly loved this book. Sarah Gailey has a way with words. They make body horror sound surprisingly beautiful. Weird, right? But it's true. Read it for yourself! It's haunting and full of grief and sadness that feels very real.
I can definitely see why some people might dislike the ending of this book, but I don't think the author was keeping it a secret or anything. All the information was laid out for us clear as day!

We Spread by Iain Reid

Dizzying, disorienting, and very sad. Iain Reid is great at making me feel like I'm losing my mind. Making a mental note to go hug my grandparents now.
