I truly loved this! Everything that I didn’t like in the first book was improved. So cozy and adventurous. The plot started right away, and it was more exciting. I loved the introduction of rose and Ariadne. I was nervous they would be boring, but they actually balanced out the group. The romance wasn’t spicy, but it didn’t feel like anything was missing. Can’t wait to read the next one. the way this one ended, I think the 3rd will be really exciting. Highly recommend the audiobook; it probably left me with a better impression than if I had read the book.
i can give the author a little slack for giving Colin a bad temper since this was published over 20 years ago and the book is historical fiction. But after it was mentioned more than two times, I was uncomfortable. Grabbing her arm and it leaves a bruise?!?! That’s unacceptable. Seems like they didn’t include his temper in the show, thank god!
Second, I found everyone’s reaction to the big reveal a little odd. I suspected Colin would be upset that his wife insulted people for years, since he values kindness. I really wanted Penelope to apologize to people!! Does she not have remorse?
I do not get the hype, and I was shocked to find out this was a NYT best book of the year. I listened to the audiobook, which was a mistake since the book is made of disjointed vingettes. I thought the writing was bland. And although I appreciate that the author was poking fun at his younger self for being pretentious, he was still pretentious while writing this book. The inclusion of quotes from obscure philosophers did not help the matter. I really wanted to get to the good stuff, because I was interested in the friendship and Ken, but I did not want to slog through another 50 pages before that happened.
