All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
5.0
I have a hangover from this book (probably for the next few months).
"Do you ever wish," whispers Werner, "that you didn't have to go back?"
"Father needs me to be at Schulpforta. Mother too. It doesn't matter what I want."
"Of course it matters. I want to be an engineer. And you want to study birds. Be like that American painter in the swamps. Why else do any of this if not to become who we want to be?"
A stillness in the room. Out there in the trees beyond Frederick's window hangs an alien light.
"Your problem, Werner," says Frederick, "is that you still believe you own your life."

I always compare every thriller or mystery book that I read with Agatha Christie's—you know, her stories always have an unpredictable murderer and you think you might predict this one from another author. The murderer (or the mysterious man in this case) somehow reminds me of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd which surprisingly is the narrator himself.
But this book also put attention to the character's mental state, especially how their childhood trauma affects their adult lives. And the greek mythology reference? I think it's amazing.
This book is a page-turner and it is haunting. Indeed, a perfect thriller.

It brought laughter but mostly tears while I read it. Absorbing.

Everything drifted out of reach one day. Everything could be taken away in a heartbeat. And if someone was still close enough to hold on to, then you should hold on.

Each story either ends up heart-breaking or heart-warming. A dazzling book.

This is what I expect when I read a romance novel. It's realistic, not-all-cheesy, and the ending breaks my heart into pieces. I currently watching the series and it couldn't get any better.
It's funny the decisions you make because you like someone, he says, and then your whole life is different. I think we're at that weird age where life can change a lot from small decisions. But you've been a very good influence on me overall, like I definitely am a better person now, I think. Thanks to you.

AHHH I don't love it as much as I love the first book. It took me a looong time to finish this one. Maybe I wasn't just in the mood. Anyway, Marcella and June totally stole the spotlight.
