My main thought is How did I not read this SOONER?
Since I consider the Six of Crows Duology by lovely Leigh Bardugo to be my favorite series of all time, I decided that my goal for my time in online school (thanks to COVID-19) was to finally read the original Grishaverse Trilogy and then KoS.
This book was the perfect blend of the two drastically different hemispheres of the same Grishaverse world, and I LOVED IT.
Firstly, can I just say that the shift from first-person POV in the original trilogy to third in SoC and KoS? BRILLIANT. It just makes the world so fleshed-out and allows for much stronger connections to the characters.
Oh, the CHARACTERS.
Zoya Nazyalensky is now one of my favorite characters of all time. I already adored Nikolai immensely, and this novel just furthered it to a new level. He is my Sobachka, and I adore him as a character.
And don't get me STARTED on NINA FREAKIN' ZENIK. She is just soooooooo wonderful. I love how she is written - I love her bravery, her ferocity, her softness. What a queen.
I couldn't make this a five star read because SoC is a five star read - and nothing can compare, in my mind. Not even this. At times, it was a bit slow, and I felt like there wasn't a ton of the fast-paced action I have come to expect from Leigh. I just know she is going to make me eat my words with KoS2.
All in all, an excellent read. 4.5 stars!
