I wanted to like this book more than I did. The pacing was odd and made the book less readable. I wish it focused on one particular stage of Marie's life at the abbey--like building the labyrinth--rather than covering her entire life in varying levels of detail.

The plot described in the synopsis doesn't truly begin until more than halfway through the book, and yet I was hooked the entire time. I don't know how Donna Tartt does it, but it works.

I really enjoyed this book . . . Until the ending. It seems to imply that
all Mizuki needed to be happy was a change in attitude and to stop nagging her husband so much. I loved the slow-growing romance between Mizuki and Kiyoshi, and I'm okay with it's ending, but I would have liked the shift in Mizuki's life to come from some kind of renewed understanding with her husband.

I loved getting lost in this book! The French-chateu setting is so dreamy. This book also has well-written, believable characters, a perfectly steamy romance, and a smattering of family and friend drama to keep things interesting. The beginning is a little slow and exposition heavy, but well worth it for the rest of the ride.
