My Grandad was friends with James. I never met either of them before they passed away sadly but reading his copy of 2 girls 2 catamerans has been such a lovely and heart warming experience. James can sound a bit ‘of his time’ and maybe sometimes a bit self congratulating in the book but I mean fair play because the three of them did pull off a crazy and historic feat. Such a nice call to adventure and a free thinking account of life as sea people. I loved it and think I want to build a boat…

Not sure this one was for me, didn’t really love the process of reading and found it mostly a drag. Funny in parts but just not enough, maybe should’ve committed a bit more with it

I enjoyed this so much! Such a masterful telling of this story, dropping bits of info at the right time and building your understanding of this universe in a really enjoyable way. This book weaves so many big ideas around society, politics, time, family, and individualism together so seamlessly but without ever demanding too much from the reader. Yeah amazing

The sand... the sand! Kind of fun and reflective story about sisyphean tasks and the purpose/meaning of life. At the same time it's also a bit lighthearted and felt a bit like a parable to me rather than depressingly overtly existential. Definitely a lot to think about, I didn't looove reading it but it was a fun experience. Keen to see the film. Defo has a very shallow female character, at the same time, I think it's meant for eerie effect and could probably work if the sexes were swapped.
