The middle section was a bit slow but beginning and end was good. Trope of grumpy and sunshine will also win.

This actually made me really sad. The ending especially, when Barb talked to Pupkin my heart just went.

This was, well something?
The prose had a dreamlike atmosphere, sprinkled with gore.
I'm not sure all the gore (especially marlichen's fantasies and vomiting) added to the narrative but it was an interesting addition. Some of the gore (blood under her nails) added to the mystery and alluded to the narratives end, those parts were beautifully crafted.

This felt like a dream, which was probably the goal.
