Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi

Fantastic. Books like this showcase the power of graphic novels. I liked it enough that I made sure it landed on our end-of-year gift list for teens. Deceptively simple artwork showcases an emotionally devastating story.
(I read this in one day.)
There's one panel, near the end of the book, that is devastating in its stark simplicity. I wanted to hug the author for not attempting to put a spin or a polish on her emotions, but allowing the reader to see them in their raw, unpolished state.
Brave, brave stuff.

Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi

Told in the same style as the first book. I'm still trying to decide if the uncertainty and unsureness that comes through so clearly in the first half of the book is a result of uneven writing or if it's just an accurate remembrance of how lost *she* was at that age. It doesn't pack the immediate suckerpunch of the first book, but it does leave me wondering where the author went from here.

Slow start. Got frustrated with the quick jumps back and forth between the two main topics; some sections were just a few paragraphs long. As the murders picked up and the Fair got closer, I got more engrossed, and blew through the last 150 in a hurry.
I wish there had been additional photos, though.

Okay, not great. Got heavily bogged down in the near-future sections of the book. Found the far-future sections more interesting. I've got the second book in the series and I figure I'll give it a go, but unless I have a much better experience I think I'm done with this series.
