A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir
4.0
I’m surprised how difficult it was to get into this book, esp considering how much I loved the first two. Maybe I needed to re-read them since quite a bit of time had passed in between? In any case, it was by the 60% mark that I really started to gobble it down and then I ended up finishing the book in less than a day! Sabaa Tahir... your books... I need more, now!
I love the characters! They’re so gritty and complex and they continue to evolve as the story continues, revealing deeper truths and realizations for each. Shocker for me, when the book ended I realized that my favorite character became the Blood Shrike. I enjoy that the female leads are strong, fierce and all-around bad ass!
By the time the book ended, I was tearing at the losses, shocked at the revelations and on tenterhooks for the next book. There’s so much that can happen and I can’t wait to read it, so I can’t believe it’s going to be another year until it comes out!! Will definitely have a re-read of the series before then ;)

2.5 - 3 stars? I don’t know. This was a quick read for me and the way this ended really threw me because wow, Definitely wasn’t expecting that. But I am still processing my thoughts and feelings about this book. I’m not sure that it’s entirely positive? But I didn’t strongly dislike this book either. From a child’s perspective and essentially as a book written for a younger audience, I think that it’s well done, but I’m not commenting so much on the historical context of the book. I think I need to have let it all settle in my head more for now before adding to this!
