Kristen Hannah could write about a dog walker and make it the most riveting, heart wrenching book.

I like these books but to be honest they are just missing a complexity to them that I look for in fantasy. Maybe I’m just spoiled. But I really do enjoy this series!

I have read chapters and excerpts of this book before but finally got around to it on my tbr and I’m so happy I did. It’s such an incredible, decisive, airtight case for the ways in which systemic, state sponsored racism is the cause of continued residential and economical racialized segregation in our country today. This should be mandatory reading for…everyone.

I really enjoyed this debut novel, and found it a beautiful meditation on consciousness and what it means to be human. I loved the themes that Nayler explored through the interweaving storylines and complex ways he examines consciousness (AI vs. human vs. animal). I think there is so much depth here, and honestly it would be so easy to teach a course on this novel.
That said, I felt it was missing some “oomph” to really take it to the next level. It was a steady as she goes book that was missing a real crescendo. The mystery in the plot was very secondary to the reader exploring the mystery of consciousness. I think that would have taken this novel to the next level.

Still just as excellent as the first time I read it long ago! Gave it a re-read to read-immerse myself before reading the dark forest. Loved the audiobook as well!
