No Mark Upon Her by Deborah Crombie

another good one that focuses on the mystery more than the relationship. You know the person they're setting up isn't the one, but who is?

Meh. Free from amazon, so I didn't waste any money. Concepts are interesting, but the writing is very much that of am inexperienced author. Too much exposition, too much telling rather than showing.

Definitely for fans of Stephen King. I actually had to remind myself several times that this is NOT a King novel. Long story short, man buys a "ghost" through an internet sale. Gets more than he bargained for. Well written, keeps you wanting to read to the end. The end is a little expected, but it was definitely worth the 1.5 days it took to read.
To Dwell in Darkness by Deborah Crombie

One of my favorites in the series. Both Duncan and Gemma are involved in cases, and we get just enough domesticity. Duncan's case involves a protester who died in a fiery conflagration at a busy train station, and Gemma's case involves the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl. Both cases hit close to home for different reasons. Plus, kittens....

If you like Virginia Woolf, you might like this book. Stress on the "might." And, of course, I haven't read enough Woolf recently enough to know if that's an accurate comparison, but that was the feeling I got while reading. I wanted to like the book, but it was just tedious. We get a sense of the "lie" early on, and I just kept reading because I was hoping it would be something even more profound. I wouldn't say that the time I spent reading was wasted per se, but I would never think of picking up this book again.
The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club by Duncan Whitehead

Not great, but a fun and easy read. I didn't guess the very end, though I probably should have. Carla, Cindy, and Heidi are members of the Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club, which is really just a cocktail hour in the park with their dogs. When their 4th member dies of cancer, all hell breaks loose. Affairs, deception, politics, you name it, ask in a tiny Savannah, GA, neighborhood.

Lots of problems with details, such as the Nazi connection, and the readiness of the residents to contract hit-men, but still entertaining.
The Damnation Game by Clive Barker

I keep forgetting that "horror" also = gore. I really wanted this book to be more than it was, more sinister, more mysterious, more suspenseful, I don't know what. Barker opens with a newer intro that talks about some of his experiences with Faustian stories and deals with the devil. I can see where he was going in this book with that line of thought, but the actual bargain was too diaphanous to actually see.
