The White Album by Joan Didion
4.0
Quite like the Beatles album in its range and up-down rollercoaster of love it/hate it/could care less/need to revisit when I'm older.
The snobbishness can grate (her pieces on feminism, Hawaii, and the egregious Cali assumptions), but there are some things here that I wouldn't live without. The title essay, the ones on malls and migraines, and the final two are essentials — heartbreaking, rousing.
