While The Stranger at the Wedding promises intrigue and suspense, it ultimately falls short of delivering a satisfying story. The title feels like a misdirect, as the so-called “stranger” plays a minimal role in the larger narrative. The plot meanders through Annie and Mark’s whirlwind romance, only to end on an abrupt and underwhelming note. Questions linger unanswered, and the pacing feels rushed in key moments. Honestly, Jane Eyre did it better.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advance read. While this one didn’t quite work for me, I appreciate the opportunity to give it a try.
I felt like it did a REALLY good job of capturing how it feels when you realise what you believed is wrong but also it would be WAY easier if you just forgot that and went back to your “normal” not that I would know what that feels like
The characters aren’t super well developed but if you need a story where bad guys lose and good girls win (and who doesn’t sometimes) it’s a fast read. It’s an exhausted trope but it’s one that’s exhausted in real life too so 🤷🏼♀️
This book reminds me of Bridge to Terebithia, Speak, and Lord of the Flies. It’s crazy how many different thoughts and emotions got packed in this book, it somehow encapsulates so many different experiences of girlhood even while the plot is about four girls with the most unnatural upbringing. I loved this so much.
