“Alternate universe idea: Theo and I are living together in a huge house overflowing with hats because I bought him a new one every day to get him to stay.”

Oh wow.. Oh wow wowow... I feel like I've been torn apart and then hit by a car and then stomped on all over likeee my heart is aching right now. Just FYI... This is going to be a completely self-indulgent rant about this book cause I have no idea how book reviews are supposed to actually work.

First of all, the entire time I was reading I was mad as hell that Wade was being treated so badly by everyone
"Wade closes his eyes, fighting back tears, and shakes his head. 'Clearly. You're no longer suffering alone, unlike me. Real nice, Griffin. You're so fucking selfish.'"

Dude this hurt me. And Griffin didn't even bother contacting him after or anything, even though Wade baked fucking cupcakes for him

got this on a whim yesterday at the library so id have something to read on my trip today cause id have no service… it was alright, it honestly didnt go the way i anticipated.. when i started this i expected it to be basic, randy would realize he shouldnt change for some guy and date someone who likes him for him. thankfully that wasnt the case at all, instead it became a story about stereotypes and shitty homophobic parents and idk i liked that… laughed so hard when there was a ASEXUAL in this tho like whyyy are you at a camp for gay people you bitch

A couple chapters into this book I decided to look up the novel on google, honestly, no idea why I did that lol I can't remember at all anymore. But when I did, I saw that there was a shit ton of controversy surrounding it and honestly... not surprised at all. It's pretty much impossible to write a book about a topic like this without people being upset. My take away.. I enjoyed it. I loved the authors writing style, it was nice to read even if the topic was morbid. There's this one part towards the end that I had to reread a couple times cause I liked it so much
"So when my mother asks me to forgive her, I say, "Of course I do." I don't tell her again she couldn't have stopped it, that it wasn't her fault, and that she didn't deserve it. I swallow those words instead. Maybe somewhere deep in my belly, they'll take root and grow."

It was a really nice moment of realization for Vanessa, for her to understand that none of it was her fault

Reading this was especially difficult during the parts where Strane would manipulate her. Which btw, I find it odd that she never calls him by his first name, not even when they're both adults... But anyways, Strane was a little too good at messing with her brain. Everything he was saying made sense!! Like when he was convincing her she was the one who had the power in the relationship because she could get him fired and she could get him sent to jail... That was insane. He made himself seem like the victim.
I also can't believe the mother handled it the way she did like wowww you don't even care that you found a picture of your daughter with her teacher like what the hell... I don't know.. I guess it's hard to judge a situation like this when you've never been in it. But I imagine if I was in her position I would've killed that teacher with my bare hands maybe I'm crazy.
Saw someone say in one of the reviews on here that maybe the author should've made it more obvious that the teacher was an awful person, and tbh I agree, there were moments where he acted like a normal human being. But I guess that's life and nobody is ever black and white... it's just how it is

Though the ending was kinda abrupt, it was still good, I liked it, not sure if I'd ever read it again lol but it was still good
