2.5 i guess. definitely better than its predecessor, but it lost me around 60% in, at which point it moved too slowly and too quickly, somewhat simultaneously. it was fine! but just fine.

A novel so expertly crafted and richly imagined, that I couldn't help falling absolutely in love with this magical version of Cairo and its utterly badass inhabitants! The setting is definitely this series' strongest feat, and I fear I will have to spend a long time familiarising myself with all its variations, and excitingly waiting for more!

when people used to describe books as 'life-affirming' i thought it was the kind of exaggerated superlative used exclusively for marketing purposes. until this book was just that for me: life-affirming, down to the smallest crevices of my existence.

i've said it before and i will say it again, but this sub-genre of healing fiction is truly making the most for those of us depressed and burnt out and sooo angry at the world.
