Predictable (and not in a fun way), with wooden two dimensional characters. Not enough interest to continue.

A lot of info dumping of very serious topics contained in a flimsy fictional narrative - I’d rather read a history book to get this information.

Writing felt a bit too juvenile to hold interest - characters felt wooden and two dimensional.

Sickeningly sweet with a plot that had promise but ended up middling and characters whose actions repeatedly made no sense.

It’s so weird because there’s nothing inherently wrong with this story, but it didn’t feel different or unique enough to hold my attention, and I couldn’t help but keep comparing it to The Last Bookshop in London (by the same author) - which is one of my favorite books of the last decade and which I will recommend until the end of time - and it just felt flat in comparison.

Mid 20th century Scottish historical fiction with very relatable themes - had a literary fiction feel to it; way more character driven than plot driven. Also, I’m not sure why because I truly don’t think this makes any sense but I was reminded of Drew Barrymore’s Riding in Cars with Boys a lot. *shrugs*

I sorta kinda accidentally buddy read this with a friend and I remember both of us finished around the same time and sent each other text messages that said something like "wtf did I just read" and then we started comparing notes and even though I originally rated it a 4, as we kept chatting and talking about plot points and so on and so on I ended up moving my rating down to a 2.5 because honestly wtf did I just read

Ahhhh, Sophie Kinsella. Love it or hate it, there’s no in between (for me). This wasn’t one of my more recent favs (see: Party Crasher, which I LOVED), but I think for some of her die hard fans it’ll be just fine.

A couple notes:

The first 10% is classic Kinsella and I loved that

There’s a tiny bit of instalove, meh

A big part of the subplot is just that … sub(par)

This would make a fantastic movie but novelization didn’t hit right

If this gets made into a movie I will watch it for Herbert alone and that is not a lie

Having really liked The School for German Brides, I was excited to be given the chance to read this book, and it definitely did not disappoint. One of the things I’ve enjoyed from her books is the murky motivations some of her characters have and this one gives you a lot to think about in terms of gray morals.

One of the timelines also deals heavily with the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, which I knew very little about and really enjoyed learning more of as the plot progressed.

Both timelines have strong female characters that are easy to root for, and both have romances woven throughout that are not overpowering and allow the female MCs the chance to have their own stories, which I appreciated.

Definitely recommend this one! (Also, there are recipes inside!!)
