I love Tobias Madden. I did not love this book. A lot of the character actions felt unforgivable. I do appreciate how Tobias Madden always writes in a relatively progressive lens.

Rep: all white characters, some GNC side characters, sapphic MCs
It was fluffy, it was nice, the message was cute. But it was boring and I kept thinking that was the end or hopefully would be.
Obviously, do not buy or promote as it’s SMP #freePalestine

Honestly, really entertaining but it’s straight even though somewhere else it was tagged queer.

It was very “look at how good I am for hating that I’m rich and have my own private island” (see fake woke). It was also VERY horny and definitely classist while constantly trying to tell you how not classist it was.

Oooh girl! That’s some good stuff!
Representation: Cree MC, Female lead (actually, were there even men in this book??) Cree Side Characters, indigenous side characters, two spirit side characters, lesbian side character
Vibes: community <3 in the face of pain, adversity, suffering and definitely some scary elements of Cree beliefs! Loved it!

MC: Half-Mexican
Supporting Characters: White, Japanese, Latinx
Author: Latinx
This book wasn’t necessarily for me just due to the nature of the contents (miscarriage, older characters) but I absolutely valued the lesson on community. On love and familial love that is from a chosen family. I really think I’ll carry this story with me for a long time.

White MC, Indigenous Supporting Character
Author: Indigenous
A super cool twist on the horror genre that feels a lot more campy and high school while still being a horror. I absolutely enjoyed every bit of this and will be reading much more by Stephen Graham Jones

How epically disappointing! Does anyone know how activism works? Or pay attention to how little the one percent gives a shit about us?! Well for sure this author didn’t! Seriously, the solution to the one percent is to ask them kindly to stop being so cold hearted and uncaring? Dear God, and it’s written by a BIPOC author? It’s got the intellect of a middle schooler writing about how they’re going to solve world hunger by asking people to share their food. Fucking disappointing.
And to add! There is not a single strong female character in this!? And the MC is a SCAB! I’m just so beyond with this book. Is this a joke? Is suffering a joke to you?! But no, sure, go ahead and write like a white person with no idea how activism works.

Very informative and as a BIPOC person, I appreciated the discourse on how white women have colonized asexuality
