Elara and the Passing by MG Hunt, MG Hunt
4.0
BEWARE OF SLIGHT SPOILERS!
This was a fast-paced, beautiful fantasy adventure story
Highlights of the book:
• Determined female MC
• Magical abilities regarding elements. I always love that trope in fantasy or sci-fi
• Survival elements of getting through the mountain. There is more survival to ensure after getting through the mountain but I won’t spoil anything
• A traveler accomplishing what no other traveler has accomplished
• Beautiful descriptions of places and people
• (sorry for the spoiler!) a hidden civilization
• A heck of a cliffhanger
What could have been improved:
• Constant grammar and spelling errors
• This is described as a YA novel yet the protagonist is described as being 25, so would NA or Adult be a more appropriate classification?
• Not much information given about Elara’s background or about the world and its magic
• Some scenes felt rushed
• There are some slight plot holes or scenes that don't make sense. In one scene, Elara (sorry for slight spoiler) thrusts her arms to use her abilities but she was previously described as having her hands tied behind her back yet there is no mention between this and the scene where she thrusts her arms of how she got her hands untied
Overall, I enjoyed this fantasy adventure and can't wait to read Still Waters Run Deep

Protectors Inc.: A Warrior's Requiem by Emilie Ocean, Emilie Ocean
4.0
I enjoyed being an ARC reader again for Emilie. The story follows a young woman named May who is brought from the World War II era to modern times by an organization of superheroes who believe she is a savior who can help them defeat a powerful enemy. But is she the Savior? And will she reunite with a man she fell in love with back in the past?
• Alternates between past and present
• May feels like an outsider in the past due to being a woman of color in America and an outsider in the present due to time traveling.
• Heavy Marvel vibes with superheroes, politics, angst amongst the heroes, and so on.
• The author’s love of languages shows yet again in her writing.
• I love the platonic love between May and Christopher. I thought it would be a love triangle between them and Bash but that did not happen, and that’s refreshing, although Christopher is a jerk.
Tropes
• Time travel
• Superpowers
• Chosen one
• Fighting the attraction at first
• Jealousy
• Childhood best friends
• Corrupt organization(s)
• New York City
