This Is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar
1.0
i really wished the setting, the circumstances in which this story takes place and the characters were more defined and they could be more easily understood. it was really confusing and sometimes i couldn't even tell if the narrative voice was blue or red. i think i got them confused several times...
okay, maybe what makes this book special is not that but the gorgeous, abstract and very lyrical vocabulary. that is not enough for me though.
i wish we, as readers, had more information about the sci-fi worldbuilding (there is none, just some vague ideas here and there that are not explained, you're on your own with that). i wish we knew more about red and blue as characters, because the only thing we know for sure about them is that they fall in love for some reason. and good for them, but who are they? their personalities are non-existent. i know this story focuses on their romance but come on. if i don't have a clear image about them, what they like, what they do, what they feel, how do you expect me to care about them? they're cute, but because i don't know who they're as people (are they people? idk) i really couldn't invest myself in their relationship as much as i would have liked to.
and the premise of the book is really good, i was so intrigued by it because it combines a lot of things that i absolutely adore, but it left me with a bittersweet feeling. everything was so vague and i felt as if i had to understand everything without the author saying anything, and that ain't it.
a bit disappointing.
