a fine collection of personal essays exploring themes concerning the illusion of choice, hegemony and power, violence, social & economic roles, and womanhood. i found some of the author’s ramblings on the balance of a dual experience, as both creators of cultural capital and participants in a capitalist system, and meta-discussions on writing about writing quite thought-provoking and worthy of further exploration.
despite some of the compelling discussions presented in these essays, the format seemed to eclipse the substance. i would’ve preferred a more direct and concise exploration of these themes, as the author’s gimmicky approach felt tangential, drawn out, and, at times, nonsensical. as an appreciator of commas, this was a tough one to get through.
