Even though this book is purely fiction, it can be considered written master class when I comes to the Nigerian American- African American tension. Even though I am not Nigerian I often found myself nodding my head in some of Ifemelus’ American experiences. I even read the scene at the store out loud to some friends because it tickled me so much.
Even though I think I personally enjoyed reading Ifemelus’ perspective. Seeing how the separation was tracked through Obinzes’ eyes was great for context and it made their reunion that much sweeter.
This was a great easy to read comfort from an amazing author.
Viola gets all of the flowers for this autobiography.
She was completely open and unfiltered. I love that we are reading how she finds herself and her voice is so powerful in this book. I love that she took the power to write this about her life. I cannot imagine the courage it must have taken to write something so vulnerable.
She had me in tears by the 3rd chapter and laughing at the end.
I recommend you do the full experience of having her voice in the audiobook read this to you as you follow along with a physical copy. It will completely grip you. This without a doubt is my favorite read of the year. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
I enjoyed every bit of this book. Jane Eyre completely took over my life for awhile. She had me completely rooting for her in the plethora of dire circumstances she found herself in. This was a perfect start to getting back into reading classics.
I totally recommend the audio version of this book. It is so fantastic. The voice actors are so heartfelt it will almost have you convinced that Daisy Jones & The Six are a real band.
This is completely different from what I would normally read. However, the way he wrote this in second persan and as a person of color I could completely relate to the love and trauma he wrote in this story. It was fantastic.
This is a fantastic book that looks into how a individual can change the church. It really makes you look at yourself and your inner biases and how they affect the church as a whole.
I did not expect to actually enjoy reading a perspective of someone in the KKK, I actually enjoyed how the author had that perspective, the preacher, and the town. This was an interesting book on how race relations still affect us today. I actually did some of my own research to get more background on this town and see where bother are now. This was definitely a good read and I have already recommended it to friends.
