The Diviners by Libba Bray
3.0
Loved the setting and concept, but the pacing was off, with the head-hopping atrociously frequent. Will pick the sequel up in hopes of a better execution!
The Original by Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette Kowal
4.0
As a story exploring existential themes in a well-lived world, The Original makes up for its short action sequences and simple plot with brilliant narration and an externalized inner conflict.
The pacing was slower in the first half than in the second, and it made me wish the ending was a bit longer. The book does have an abrupt climax and a resolution that's probably 2 sentences long, which might be jarring for a few. That said, the world itself is intriguing enough that I wouldn't mind reading other stories set in it.
