This was moving slow at first and I had trouble getting into it. And then it picked up speed and carried me breathless to the finish. Cannot recommend enough.
Don't read the blurb or back cover or reviews. The less you know going in, the better.

The narrator sounded like a friend of mine who passed on and I got too sad listening to this.

Addictive. The first book I've thought about throughout the day and had to resist dropping everything for in many years. The concept is so fascinating.
I do wish the narration had been a little less heavy-handed, though, and that our narrator hadn't been so slow to pick up on the clues so liberally sprinkled throughout. That was frustrating.
Also, Adderall is not Klonopin, and they do not have the same effects. So when you use one prescription's name throughout your book and then switch it up the last time, it's quite confusing for the readers!

An awful lot of back and forth and twists and turns. Could have been a lot shorter, especially the third act.
But a beautiful story and an interesting tale of the pleasures and pitfalls of devotion.
The little speech about women's equality in the last pages was unexpected.

I would have given five stars but I dislike being dropped into the action and then flashing forward and backward in time with no help from the author. It took me out of my immersion in the book. I felt the same way about Left Hand of Darkness.

I don't know how I got tricked into reading this. I don't know what I thought it was. I think I was in the midst of my obsession with Italian summer (thanks, André Aciman) and saw "magic realism" and clicked. This was so pulpy and, when it finally had a twist I thought was somewhat smart, it turned around and tied things up in the most ridiculous way. Cannot recommend.
Oh, but the audiobook is read by Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls, and she does a great job. Probably wouldn't have finished otherwise.
