I want to start this review with the preface that I am a gay trans man
TWs: transphobia, homophobia, transmedicalism
This is one of my least favorite books I’ve read. There are some like able characters (see: Linda, Rhonda) but I found Sam and Tom incredibly annoyingthey make constant bigoted passes at each other, Tom speaks on behalf of transmeds, Sam is one of those cis people who call trans men girls and thinks that trans people “owe” it to cis people to come out. also some comments from characters seem oddly racially/sexuality/gender motivated and it was very odd, since the book was written by a cis white man. The plot overall was good, though odd at some points (see: Linda ie persephone being dead??) i liked the plot with Lola and the other queens, i liked sams drag ark, but there really isn’t enough redemption to make this story worth it. Also I feel like sam never really got what he deserves for how he treated tom. the fact that he was completely transphobic is just glossed over. this is what I get for reading a cis author i guess. I sincerely hope this review can stop someone from wasting their time on this book, go read the witch king if you want good trans fantasy.
