The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë
5.0
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is simply fantastic, the best classic I´ve read all year. It´s long, but it didn´t feel long. The characters are brilliant, the prose is surprisingly easy to read, and very fluent. In the end I was grinning like a crazy person, after being so nervous I almost shook. I got deeply invested into the story, which is just the best feeling. Perhaps my favorite aspect of the whole book are the themes - difficult matters courageously handled. Even through modern eyes The Tenant of Wildfell Hall came across strongly feminist. I can only imagine what kind of a reception it got at the time and I love how Anne didn´t shy away from the hard stuff. I can only admire her, and grief her early passing. It´s so sad that just after two books I´ve read all there is from Anne Bronte. It feels unfair how The Tenant of Wildfell Hall always stays in the shadow of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, it deserves much more recognition.
