All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
4.0
I'd already seen the film but I can tell you, the two are so vastly different it was like reading a completely different story.
Admittedly, having seen the film did mean I knew the ending to the book, but the journey was still wonderful.
This is such a heartwarming, painful, open, and raw look at grief and loss as well as the effects that can have on the ones who are left behind to deal with the loss.
I'll admit, I didn't get Finch at first and found him a little frustrating but he grew on me the more I read into his backstory and the more we got into his mind. I did like Violet's character though and could imagine myself in her shoes throughout the whole book.
Their relationship is unconventional but wonderful, heartbreaking and passionate. For a YA book it has a great romantic subplot.
The latter half of the book (the last quarter) was hard to get through emotionally and I'm not gonna lie, I cried like a baby. I've only cried at maybe like 3 books before but it was just so raw and real. Difficult for some to read, no doubt, but I appreciate a frank look at reality indication and this book delivered.
CONTENT WARNING: Cursing, Violence, Suicide, Suicide Attempt, Death, Grief, Domestic Abuse, Eating Disorder, Bullying, Mental Illness, Divorce
