The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson
5.0
No book I have ever read has cliff hangered so hard and I am very much here for it. I literally shouted "MAUREEN JOHNSON YOU CANNOT DO THIS TO ME" when the last chapter ended after driving randomly around my neighborhood to finish the last bit of audiobook. I'm honestly furious about how good this sequel was. Even as parts of the mysteries at the core of the book are solved others become even more complex and more unknowns reveal themselves--so many unanswered questions remain!--but in a way that is deeply, deeply satisfying because its the result of so much character development and carefully plotting. Every detail matters here, from the outfits people are wearing to the off hand comments a classmate makes, and while I have my suspicions about how the final pieces will weave together, I'm quivering in anticipation because so much could change with just one new piece of information. And Stevie! Oh sweet Stevie with your good intentions and deals with various devils and desire to make things right. I loved her more and more, even when I wanted to shake her and because this book is so potential spoiler rich I can't tell you anything else without potentially ruining things for you. AHHH THIS SERIES!!!!
