Magnolia Parks by Jessa Hastings
5.0
“Cut me and I’d bleed him.” Need I say more?
I first saw this book when I was just getting back into reading again and the idea of it really intrigued me. I decided to never read it, though, when I learned of the heavy language and sexual content (more on this in the content section below). And yet I found myself picking it up and flipping through it every single time I saw it at a book store. So a few days ago I decided enough was enough and that I could at least give it a chance; if the content was too much I’d just put it down. But I never did.
When I did start this book, I went in to it fully expecting to not like the characters but to just enjoy their angst and drama. Ummm, no. Did I hate every single one of these characters at times? Yep. But I also love them. In fact, I think I kind of hate and love them all at the same time. And their “angst and drama?” I didn’t enjoy it one bit. It ripped my heart out and tore it to pieces. I also didn’t think I would ever root for BJ and Magnolia but… I know this might be controversial but I do really think they belong together. They both have their own issues and need A LOT of therapy but I think at the core they are really good together… when they’re not breaking each other’s hearts.
And let me just state this for the record: Jessa Hastings likely has the most beautiful writing style of any author I’ve ever read. And THE QUOTES?! Sooooo good.
I did guess the final plot twist at the end but only because I accidentally read a half spoiler about it online and filled in the gaps. Accidentally seeing spoilers is the worse!
content: the content didn’t end up bothering me at all. There is a lot of talk of sex and hooking up but it was never really detailed and didn’t make me uncomfortable. The characters are a lot more casual about sex than I’d prefer but that’s to be expected. The language was what I was more concerned about, though, because you can always skip spice (though there wasn’t really any) but I find that cussing in books usually effects me a good bit and I start to think the words I’m reading as I go about my life, which I don’t want to do. I don’t know what it was about this but the language here didn’t bother me. Maybe it’s just because I’ve gotten pretty good about skipping over those words or replacing them in my mind but I never once thought about putting this book down because of content.
5 stars because I’ll never recover ⭐️
“How’s the weather, Parks?”
