To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
5.0
This is marked as my second reading ... second while tracking on GoodReads. Although it isn't one I'd read repeatedly, and honestly, not one I remembered many of the more minute details (on my re-read this time, I felt like I didn't recognize some things). I read this seven years ago with my son when he was a sophomore, and he's recently been attempting audiobooks. I put this one on his list, wondering if he might be drawn to a book he had read before (even if it was required reading). He was! While we had the audio checked out, I figured I'd give it a go also. I ended up grabbing the Kindle edition to review some things more in depth, and then noticed the graphic novel adaptation, which is NOT something I'd normally look into, but figured I'd give a try (it's review is next, and my original review is https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1786517417). I don't think I've ever watched the movie in full, so perhaps that's up next.
I'm not a huge fan of Sissy Spacek ... always picturing her as Carrie, even though I've never watched the movie fully. She did a really good job narrating this though, although Jem was pronounced "Jim" to my ears (and that was knowing it was Jem). I didn't care for the music added at some chapter starts. While I appreciate audio, I think this book is better "read" so that notes and highlights can be taken. This is bookclub dynamite ... so many things to discuss, and glancing at the library (to see if they have the movie, not included free on any of the streaming services we have) I see so many things devoted to discussions and exploring this novel. Might need to check out some of them as well.
I'll admit to listening a bit before bed ... figuring I had already read this. But upon reviewing the Kindle copy, I have realized I don't really remember the book as much as I thought I did. That it's NOT one I should listen to drowsy or falling asleep to.
I know this is a favorite of my Hubs ... (maybe more the movie from his childhood?) Funny, he is in London on a trip while I was reading this and sent me a picture of a bar there "Tequila Mockinbird". Need to discuss it a bit with my son who just listened to it again too ...
