after daydreaming about this one for approximately 24 hours, I think I’m finally ready to put my thoughts in this one into some sort of a rambling review 🐉
it is no spoiler to say that this book absolutely 100% lives up to the hype!!! is it the most creative fantasy world I’ve read? no. is it the most unique fantasy book I’ve read? also no. but is the writing so addicting, the characters so lifelike, and the plot so damn intriguing that you physically cannot stop reading it? yes yes, a thousand times yes 🥹
game of thrones meets harry potter (🖕🏼 jk rowling tho) meets divergent in this dragon-filled political realm - and the world building was so excellent I wanted to be in every single damn section of that school 😮💨
violet is now among my favorite relatable characters of all time, right up there with nesta and manon. we have to stan a vulnerable angel who wants to make the world a better place but refuses to accept her role in it!!!! she’s everything I need a strong FMC to be 💪🏼🖤
and the cast of characters surrounding her - between outcast but hot wingleader daddy xaden (I mean new book boyfriend HELLOOO), bestie rhiannon, cinnamon roll sweetie liam, punk rock imogen - and the list continues … they were all so fleshed out and REAL I wanted to give them all a hug for the ✨ trauma ✨ of this book and this world
but let’s be honest, the best part of this book were the dragons 🐉🐲 there’s no contest, I would absolutely lose my mind and risk it all for tairn, sgyael, andarna, and the rest of the flight crew. they talk!!!! they have feelings!!!! they are cute as hell!!!! (at least in my brain)
I’m not touching upon a lot of the plot in this review to avoid even minor spoilers, and I truly believe going in blind did a lot for me in absorbing this story. if you can picture students learning to be dragon riders in a harry potter style school, with the added games of divergent ready to weed out the weaklings, you’ve got just the start of this story - and it only gets better from there!
I have already pre-ordered IRON FLAME because I am desperate to know what happens next to all of my faves!! please do the world a favor and believe booktok on this one 🫶🏼
rating: 5 (million) stars
wine pairing: new zealand sauvignon blanc
