Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
5.0
I somehow totally forgot to review this...whoops.
I loved this book and it started me on a trend of autobiography audio books! But so far, nothing else has lived up to this. It’s funny, heartbreaking and gives an incredible insight into the time of Apartheid. I think we all know it was a horrific thing but Trevor Noah gives us an unparalleled insight into growing up under this regime.
It’s not a story about the fight, it’s a story about a child and the perception he gives of this world as he suffered through it. Throw into the bag his black and white parents and the impact that has on him, giving him a status of basically being a crime, and we get a whole new look at it.
Honestly, I was shocked by some of the stuff that has happened to him and his family and it shows just how terrible this time in South African history was. Is the regime over? Yes. Are the behaviours and the ideals gone? Well...perhaps not.
I encourage anyone that wants to read this to get the audiobook. Noah gives different accents and voices throughout and listening to him slip between languages with ease is a dream.
Thought provoking, heart breaking, laugh out loud funny and thoroughly enjoyable.
